Backpackers love coming to Canberra as it is here that they can truly learn about the essence of Australia and its diverse history and culture. This city has a fascinating past that is sketched out in an abundance of museums, historic monuments, famous icons and galleries that many backpackers are always keen to see. Within Canberra there isn’t just history and culture to enjoy, but also entertainment, nightlife, attractions, accommodation and plenty of activities fast and slow to be seen and done.

Well known for its small country charm but also its metropolitan feel like the bigger cities of Melbourne and Sydney, Canberra is made up of 313,000 people and is only 30 minutes from Sydney by air and 50 minutes from Melbourne. The Canberra airport is just 10km east of the city and taxis regularly frequent the airport for ease transportation from the moment you arrive. Buses and trains also make daily routes to drop off points throughout the city if that is the way you wish to travel.

Once you arrive you can check into many hostels that offer great dorm rooms as well as twin and double room for those of you who don’t wish to share with others. The hostels are always organising game nights and entertainment to keep you having heaps of fun and they also have their own swimming pool, laundries, dry cleaning facilities, full kitchen, bar area and boast a close proximity to many of the main attractions so you never have to travel far.

Canberra is very well known for its famous icons such as Parliament House, the Australian War Memorial, the Australian Institute of Sport and its historic museums but there are many other attractions that are sure to delight. Why not visit Questacon- the National Science and Technology Centre and wander through the Parliament Triangle where you can visit the National Gallery of Australia and much more and learn about the history, culture and creativity of Australia and its people.

There are some great sightseeing tours and hop on and hop off tours that you can join in on that will let you experience much of what Canberra holds as well as tours that take you out of the city to the beautiful National Parks where you can hang gliding, white water rafting, snow skiing in winter, horse riding, bush walking, mountain climbing, abseiling or go hurling down a one kilometre flying fox for something different. You may like to go sky diving or ride in a hot air balloon or visit one of the many wineries that fringe the city. There are action packed tours, adventure tours and slow paced lake cruises that are perfect for all kinds of weather no matter what time of year it is.

There is plenty of entertainment to include yourself in on as well while in Canberra, from the weekly markets that hold many delights, to the bars, clubs and hot nightspots that backpackers just love to dance the night away in. There are plenty of places to dine at from cafes to restaurants and when it comes to shopping the list of malls and shopping precincts and centres are endless.
